Shave'n Stuff

Jun

Some days, I take a look in the mirror and think, 'Sheesh! I sure could use a shave.' . Back in the day I'd dampen up my skin, spray some shaving foam into my palms, and smear it on my face. I then reach for the disposable razor, and with a few easy strokes, my face was stubble free. Nothing to it. At least for a few shavings, because after that, the razor would start pulling, instead of cutting. An easy fix. Toss that one in the trash, and reach for a new one. But good golly are them little razors ever expensive! And it was this, that had me looking for an alternative.

My Bush Coat

Feb
19

Tramping through the Canadian bush during the colder part of the season has required me to take a good hard look at the clothing I wore. One of the first articles I found to be inadequate was my coat. It was your typical flannel coat with a synthetic lining, and filled with synthetic insulation. It works great when your activity levels are low, but when you start working up a sweat, it soon gets to be very uncomfortable. First, it holds moisture like a sponge and it feels like it's clinging to you. It also loses all of it's insulation ability when wet.

Everyday Carry (EDC)

A big part of homesteading is preparedness. Being prepared for hardships, emergencies or even just being prepared for daily routine. We have delved into this philosophy and have learned and enjoyed a great deal in getting prepared. Prepared for what? TEOTWAWKI, stranded in the bush, power outage, being snowed in for extended periods, etc. Being a 'prepper' can be quite addictive and, possibly, overwhelming. We try not to get too carried away with our preparations, and just try and enhance some of the things we already do.

Wild Edibles: Tea!

Jan

Enjoyment and relaxation come to mind when I have a cup of tea. And with all the assorted flavours and blends that can be found at a grocery store, you're sure to find something that suits your fancy. But there are other teas out there that aren't found on a shelf, which have their own distinct flavour, and are equally, as pleasurable. They are commonly referred to as Wild or Bush Tea. And side from being free, they are also highly nutritious. Two bush teas that I enjoy are pine needle and chaga tea. In this particular blog, I'll be talking about chaga tea.

Homey Touches.

Well, we finished installing the flooring. Everything with it's installation went pretty smooth. The wood I had was just barely enough to finish the job. Each plank spans the entire length of the room so there aren't any joints. For the most part anyway. I did have to piece together the last three. Which, I must say, looks even better than the full length planks because I think it adds a little more flavour to the floor. Had I known this, I probably would have intentionally cut all of them so that there would be jointing across the whole floor.

Another House Build.

Feb
21

Yes, I'm currently in the midst of building another house. It's even smaller than the cob studio but it can fit a lot more people. It will have all the amenities as a typical house, including a kitchen, bathroom, living, eating and sleeping areas. It's going to be three stories tall, with the flue of the fireplace passing through each floor so that every level will receive radiant heat. Oh, and did I mention it's a doll house?
